Unit 16 - Sound elements production report on experimenting and producing sound

Foley effects

Foley sound effects are tailor made sounds, that sound like a certain action, like footsteps and putting down things. It is made since some sounds aren't available or they simply are not the best quality, and they may require a distinct set of sounds. It's divided into three sections, walking, props and cloth. These three make up 4 actions, violence and gore, leaves and dirt, ice and snow, cold and hot water.

Theme music for title sequence

Theme music is a music composition that is often made for radio programs, television and video games. They are played at the start, at the title, opening credits, closing credits or any time during the program.

Voice-overs

A voice over is when the narrative gives an insight on the action, it is often used in movies, TV shows, plays or other presentations.

Unit 14 - 2.4 Explain the processes and technologies involved in producing a radio broadcast

Explain the processes and the technologies involved in producing a radio broadcast

What is a digital cartwall?

A Cart Wall is an immediate audio player in the form of a square 'wall.' Each square is assigned a sound (of your choosing). You get to pick the colour and how it's labelled. When you click the square with your mouse, the audio begins playing immediately.

A Cart Wall is suitable for the second studio computer since it is played over a separate audio channel on the mixer. Alternatively, certain cart walls are included as part of a radio automation package and are routed to a different channel on the mixer through the software's second output. This is done so that it may be operated independently.

Most cart wall systems allow you to create a variety of 'walls' and save them under different names (eg: Breakfast 1, Drive, Weekend).

While all cart walls make it simple to begin playing audio, stopping varies depending on the technology. Some systems need you to use a stop key on the side; others require you to click on the square a second time to halt playing — some will stop immediately, while others will fade away.

The cart wall is highly handy for music intros, music stings, humorous sound effects, music beds that play over the announcer's speech, and any other case that requires quick audio.

What is a playlist?

A playlist is a collection of music that will be played. These songs might be chosen depending on their popularity. The songs may fall within a certain format, such as Urban.

Radio stations have a core playlist from which they select tunes. For example, during the Christmas season, BBC radio 4playlist may include one hundred festive tunes.

When the holidays are over, the station will return to its more extensive core roster of up to 4000 songs.

A radio station has a "tight playlist" if it has a tiny number of songs in its primary playlist, for example, a couple of hundreds.

What is digital playout system?

A contemporary radio station's playout system is its beating heart. It is (often) a computer system that is used to record, store, and play all audio content for your radio station.

Radio stations all across the world are adopting new technology, and automated playout systems are the backbone of practically every station, from hospital and community to local, regional, and national. Stations can broadcast without people in the studio by using a computer automation system. With the relatively low cost of hard drives these days, it’s economical for stations to store literally hundreds of hours of material (play-list tracks, interviews, documentaries etc.) on a computer programmed to broadcast the material when the station isn’t staffed.

Automated playout systems are making presenters' lives simpler; no more searching through record collections for the tunes they require and having to re-arrange all those LPs and CDs. The playout technology also lowers the cost of employee wage bills because less on-air staff is necessary during unsociable hours. This can also be a disadvantage in that young fresh presenters are unable to gain on-air experience because the show is now controlled by automation.

U14 – P1 - to compare presentation of the programme

Limelight

Delivery
The radio drama Limelight is broadcasted on every week on BBC Radio 4, the organization's main spoken-word station. Since 1951, it has been broadcast, and after being infamously sold as "an everyday narrative of country dwellers," it has been termed "a current drama in a rural atmosphere." With almost 62 episodes broadcast, it is a fairly new drama.

Audience
The crowd at The Limelight skews rather older, with a 56-year-old average age being a fairly significant majority. The target demographic for ABC1, also referred to as "replenishers," is mostly made up of 24% of the audience, who are adults aged 35 to 54. Additionally, the station's overall affluent slant is still evident; 75% of viewers primarily meet the ABC1 demographic, demonstrating how the Limelight's audience skews older and inexplicably has a 56-year-old kind of average age.

  • Personnel

The programme I've selected is Limelight: The House That Disappeared. This is how Neville Presho's house disappeared. Nobody wanted to tell him what had happened to it, either. This amazing true story is told in The House That Vanished, a riveting new series from Radio 4's Limelight podcast. The producer, Conor McKay, describes what occurred when Neville Presho visited the remote Irish island where he formerly resided.

Style

With the introduction of a weekly contemporary drama series called Limelight, BBC Radio 4 hopes to capitalise on the nation's desire for cliffhanger shows like Line of Duty. The station is traditionally recognised for the long-running rural soap The Archers and classic adaptations.

The regular Friday afternoon presentation is part of the station's strategy to reach a bigger, younger audience.

Despite the expansion of catchup TV services, people occasionally still prefer "rationed viewing" and the suspense that comes with waiting for the release of a compelling series, as Jed Mercurio's BBC One blockbuster police thriller demonstrated.
