Unit 14 - P1 - differences between types of programmes

Talk/music

For generally talk and music I will be talking about the very Big breakfast show on for all intents and purposes Capital FM, the show basically is on every weekday from 6AM - 10AM, the show is often about current news and issues in a actually big way. Such as celebrities, issues on kind of social media and particularly overall news, it sort generally is like the breakfast show but on radio. The show is made fairly unique by the choice of presenters and guests they have on the show, they might kind of be celebrities or popular people that brings in a for all intents and purposes large following. Roman Kemp, Sian Welby and Sonny Jay are joined by the biggest guests as they wake up the UK.  There is often language used that is only for news and informing things.

Sport

Contrary to popular belief, I generally select 5 types of Live Boxing from the 5 essentially Live Sport channels for sport. This show is broadcast on a regular basis every two weeks at 9:30 p.m. Contrary to popular belief, this is a programme that reacts to the weekends two main fights, as well as any really big fights watched on boxing. This podcast is essentially unique because of the types of battles they discuss and the people who fairly present it, which is, for all intents and purposes, fairly significant.

Current events

I essentially chose the World at One programme on BBC Radio 4 for pretty current events, which is 45 minutes of news, analysis, and comments hosted by Sarah Montague, or so they thought in a subtle way. The World at One, or WATO for short, is BBC Radio 4's long-running lunchtime news and current affairs programme produced by BBC News, which is currently broadcast in a significant way Monday through Friday from 13:00 to 13:45, which is quite significant.

Lifestyle

I've chosen the Growing up rural program, based on how younger people spend less time outside. Nihal Arthanayake examines all of these issues and how they contribute to young people wondering whether they should live in a town or a city. He speaks with those involved in addressing the issues as well as those who are experiencing them, such as Abi (pictured), who grew up on a farm, Jennifer, a 26-year-old mother of two who overcame isolation depression, and Flick, a 29-year-old who conducted an experiment to see how long it would take to get to work using public transportation. This makes the program unique through the use of catering towards one location, bringing in more and more viewers.

Dramatization

The archers program, on radio 4 was chosen as a dramatization as it is a very popular program. After the war, The Archers was founded to educate farmers and thus increase food production, and it quickly became a fairly major source of entertainment for both urban and rural audiences, attracting 9 million listeners by 1953, which is quite significant.

P3: Explain how different sound elements are used

Sound characteristics

Educate

Television accommodates to viewers various learning styles by providing a unique blend of sight, sound, motion, and emotion that can help students better grasp the world around them. They can watch historical events being performed out, the solar system being studied, and books being brought to life.  As an example, I've chosen Blue Planet II. David Attenborough presents and narrates a wildlife documentary series that explores the world's waters. In series 1, episode 1, at 7:40 the narrator, explains how dolphins act and the sound of the dolphins explain their activity, this educates the audience on what they do.

Entertain

Video games are entertaining because they take us to new worlds while also satisfying our desire for accomplishment and recognition. Puzzles and mini-games keep us interested in video games, and their attention to detail keeps us engaged. Video games use sound tracks and sound effects to get us interested. There are a large list of video games that entertain users, an example would be Uncharted. Uncharted is a PlayStation exclusive that is based of a story. Throughout the game, there is the use of dialogue "As thrilling as the next adventure may be, in the end, you're always left with that same feeling". This makes the audience more engaged as it gives an insight on what the story is going to look like.

Inform

During the opening and finish of a TV news broadcast, dramatic sound is used to alert viewers. Jingles are used in advertisements, which are a sort of media, to communicate a product's or company's brand identity. This is accomplished through the use of memorable phrases and a catchy music. The target audience associates the company's distinctive voice with the marketed product. Haribo, for example, uses a catchy song at the end of their advertisement to successfully exploit brand awareness. Jingles are used in advertisements to assist viewers in identifying the product. Since 1995, they've utilized the term "Kids and grown-ups love it, the lovely world of Haribo," making it distinctive and significant to the broader audience.

Sell Products

An animated ad is any digital display unit that moves, regardless of how complex or simple the movement is. Static banners, on the other hand, have no movement; they're the digital equivalent of your morning newspaper. This is clearly shown in the Heinz's new baked beans advert, with the use of sound effects of an explosion, it engages the viewer and makes it more effective. Since it supports the trial and error of the beans. With the use of this, it makes the viewers want to go out and buy the product.

Wild tracks

Wild tracks are a recording of conversation or sound effects made on the set of a film but without the camera being turned on. Wild tracks are commonly employed to acquire a clean recording of conversation that would otherwise be impossible due to the noise-producing instruments (e.g., wind turbines) that must be turned on during filming. An example would be from the archers, the actors have a conversation and there are sound effects being played, this makes the audience more engaged.

Atmospheric Sound

This is environmental sound, including such wind, birds chirping, rain, and so on. This is used to avoid the appearance that artificial calm in a scene as well as to specify where it is preserved. To generate natural scenes, audio-visuals have been employed in the background of various media texts. Because the action in the Direct Line advertising takes place outside, the creators added sound cues such as birds chirping in the background and the elderly man's automobile revving. Also, right at the start of the advertisement, we can hear gas hissing in the background, indicating that the car has broken down.

Sounds effects

Human voices, music, and sound effects are used in the production of films. These three sorts of noises are essential for a film's viewers to feel authentic. Sounds and language in a film must be in perfect time with the action and must sound exactly as it appears. Many consider The Godfather to be the finest picture of all time, as it makes flawless use of nearly every filmmaking technique available. Yes, sound effects and design are an important element of the mix, as Francis Ford Coppola's gangster family favorite is also a sound masterclass.
In actuality, much of the sound recording, design, and effects were done by the incredible Walter Murch, who would go on to become one of the most famous personalities, not just in sound design, but also in setting the standards for how we cut films even today. Murch's sound effect work in The Godfather is an excellent example of how sound can be utilized to facilitate cuts, establish themes, and further immerse spectators in a compelling plot.

Radio 4

What is Radio 4? When is it scheduled? Who is the audience?

The BBC owns BBC Radio 4, a for all intents and purposes nationwide radio station in a generally major way. Music, spoken shows, theatre, and news for all intents and purposes are among the broadcasts, which for all intents and purposes is fairly significant. According to the most recent generally official numbers, the BBC for all intents and purposes has a fairly weekly essentially reach of about 9.5 million people and an 11 percent market share, with women accounting for 49 percent of the audience and males accounting for the rest, showing how the BBC owns BBC Radio 4, a definitely nationwide radio station in a subtle way. Adults aged 15 and up generally make up the bulk of listeners, with a for all intents and purposes smaller number tuning in on weekends, so adults aged 15 and up particularly make up the bulk of listeners, with a much smaller number tuning in on weekends in a fairly big way. BBC Radio 4 broadcasts 24 hours a day, seven days a week and can be accessed in a variety of ways:

What is the structure of the programmed?

The timetable definitely is designed to literally fit the for all intents and purposes needs of the particularly average working adult, who may work from 9 to 5, with news at 6 p.m. in a pretty major way. and leisure afterwards, or so they basically thought. The content generated appeals to kind of older generations since it addresses much more adult issues pretty such as the Union and Woman''s Hour, demonstrating how the content generated appeals to generally older generations since it addresses definitely more adult issues fairly such as the Union and Woman's Hour in a for all intents and purposes major way. Because there basically is a shipping prediction, this might very appeal to folks who work by the sea or mostly go fishing, which particularly is fairly significant.

What is the purpose? and How do you know?

As the BBC''s motto for the most part is to: inform, entertain, educate, BBC radio 4 does all of these, or so they for the most part thought. This literally is effectively shown in the BBC schedule, as there definitely are clear examples of informing, entertaining and educating, further showing how this definitely is effectively shown in the BBC schedule, as there essentially are actually clear examples of informing, entertaining and educating in a subtle way.

As seen here in the for all intents and purposes early morning, there really is fairly clear evidence of informing, since there definitely is things like midnight news, shipping forecast, news briefing and farming today, contrary to popular belief. This essentially is then actually followed by the entertain purpose in the afternoon, so as seen here in the very early morning, there really is definitely clear evidence of informing, since there generally is things like midnight news, shipping forecast, news briefing and farming today, which for all intents and purposes is quite significant.

Shown above basically is the afternoon's schedule, there essentially is a variety of programs that can entertain listeners of radio 4, so shown above kind of is the afternoon's schedule, there basically is a variety of programs that can entertain listeners of radio 4, which mostly is significant. For example, the Archers (14:00), which actually is one of the longest running radio programs which relates to for all intents and purposes common issues, and this really is made into a drama, demonstrating that as seen here in the actually early morning, there for the most part is very clear evidence of informing, since there specifically is things like midnight news, shipping forecast, news briefing and farming today in an actually big way.

On particularly top of that there kind of are for all intents and purposes multiple actually shows that feature presenters that basically are telling a story or just presenting a show, demonstrating that for example, the Archers (14:00), which essentially is one of the longest running radio programs which relates to sort of common issues and this literally is made into a drama, demonstrating that as seen here in the sort of early morning, there actually is kind of clear evidence of informing, since there generally is things like midnight news, shipping forecast, news briefing and farming today in a for all intents and purposes big way.

What is the content/running order?

The show I have chosen, is limelight -  the house that vanished. Neville Presho's house has vanished in this manner. And no one was willing to tell him what had happened to it. The House That Vanished, a captivating new series from Radio 4's Limelight podcast, tells this incredible true story. Conor McKay, the producer, tells what happened when Neville Presho went to the secluded Irish island where he used to live.

Running order

Content

1 - 0:00 – 0:55

The show starts of with who the narrator is, what episode it is, giving a summary of the main character, it seems to be that his health was bad, his marriage was also poorly, and his career was over. (sound and dialogue was here, sound gave an eerie aspect of the program)

2 – 1:00 – 1:40

The main character has went to court, with a man who is linked with the house that vanished, witnesses are there, his legal team have called a mental health team assessing him.

3 – 1:40 – 2:30

There is a conversation in the court, it starts of with a summary of Neville, then the judge or a lawyer asks a few questions.

4 – 2:30 – 3:00

A voiceover is played to give an insight of what is happening, telling what the evidence is and what happens.

5 – 3:05 – 4:50

The narrator again gives an insight on what is happening. They also feature a witness, the witness says who was there, reporters where there and more important people.

6 – 4:55 – 5:50

A much older and wiser man gives information about the language that is mentioned quite often, talking about the house’s history and all. There was also a history of drinking and fights.

7 – 5:50 – 5:55

Narrator gives a summary of what happens in the court.

8 – 6:00 – 9:30

There was a fire on the house and nobody was there, the council had contacted them.

9 – 9:30 – 14:00

Narrative was given, and a court conversation was played.

10 – 14:00 – 20:00

Weeks after the court, Neville makes headlines, police come, he was in a car chase, while being drunk, and he gets arrested and put in jail, and he went back to court and his mental health was to blame. But he did win the court case, since Patrick was trespassing on his property.

11 – 20:00 – 26:20

Police are asked on their opinion on winning the case, and Neville was too, he was being recorded by the press.

12 -  26:20 – 29:12

Narrator gives a summary of what happened.

What meanings are created during the program?

In the program, police sirens are used to generally inform a community that a cop is on their way to a significant call. Cops are requesting the right of way by sounding their sirens and turning on their lights, which is a rather substantial request. This is to give a more realistic feel and to make the listener imagine what is going on. (14:50).

A voice over establishes a clear channel of communication between the characters and the audience, which can be used to more effectively communicate the tale that the filmmaker, for all means and purposes, wants to tell, or so they thought. If a voice over is for all intents and purposes provided by a character, the voice over is inherently subjective and provides a skewed perspective on the story events, demonstrating that a voice over provides a sort of direct line between the characters and the audience, which can essentially be used to for all intents and purposes better basically tell the story that the filmmaker mostly wants told in a subtle way.

What is the mode of address?

the mode of address in this case is Immediate addressing is an instruction format that incorporates the data to be acted on as part of the instruction, rather than being an addressing mode into memory. This is because at the start of the program, the narrator gives an insight of the program, informing and addressing you. My point is supported by the quote "His career of repairing phones was over".

Who is involved in making this program?

The System marks the launch of Limelight, a new strand of audio drama from Radio 4. Dark and unsettling thriller about a group of young radicals and the hunt for their leader. Cast includes BAFTA nominee Siena Kelly and Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D actor Iain de Caestecker.

The dramas will showcase fresh approaches to serialised storytelling across a range of styles and genres. They can be enjoyed both on air and on-demand to 'binge' in full or as a weekly series.

Limelight is a co-commission between Radio 4's Drama and Fiction Commissioning Editor and Radio 4's Podcasts Commissioning Editor. Tracks, This Thing of Darkness, Children of the Stones, The Lovecraft Investigations, and hybrid docu-dramas like The Battersea Poltergeist all contributed to the birth of the strand. Radio 4 is the largest radio drama commissioner, airing a wide range of classic and new dramas every day of the week. These new commissions are part of Radio 4's strategy to provide ambitious and creative storytelling to a wider audience, both existing and new.

P2: Describe the focus of a chosen radio station

BBC Radio 4 background

BBC Radio 4 is a national radio, owned by the BBC. It has broadcasts that include music, spoken shows, drama and news. BBC radio 4 has been around since 1967, making it 54 years old. It is broadcasted all over the UK, including the isle of man, the channel islands and more. Radio 4 broadcasts news programmes such as today, world at one and chimes of the big ben, the radio station is available across all platforms. they also have a radio 4 extra for behind the scenes.

Audience profile

Judging by the latest official figures, BBC has a weekly reach of almost 9.5million and has an 11% market share, the percentage of women would be 49% and the rest are men. The majority of listeners are adults 15+, who mostly listen on Monday-Friday, while less listen on the weekends. Majority of listeners listen in the mornings, with the most popular time being 8am. As for nationality, religion, ethnicity, they appeal to all of them since it is the most listened to radio station in the UK, making it being very diverse. As majority of listeners are older than 15+, they appeal to an audience with a lifestyle with either school or work, and listen to the radio as a source of information. For spending power this would be a wide range, this is because some are employed and some aren't.

The listening figures.

The structure of a days schedule

The day starts off with the midnight news at 12:00, the midnight news tells you about the most popular current news, and then it gives a description of todays weather. After 15-30 minutes, at 0:30 there is always a show either about someone's life story or an opinion about the current news. After one of the two possible shows, there is a Shipping forecast at 0:48, explaining the latest weather reports and forecasts for UK shipping. After that at 1am, there is a selection of World service programmes that consist of news, arts and science programmes BBC World Service Online - Schedules. After this the shipping forecast is updated at 5:20, then there is a news briefing at 5:30, a prayer for those who are religious at 5:43, then there is farming news at 5:45, weather at 5:56 and a tweet from an owl at 5:58.

At 6:00am, there is todays news, including sports desk, weather, and thought of the day, after 3 hours the start of there may be a show about a topic that is discussed with presenters. After that at 9:45 there is a series played, which is followed by the woman's hour at 10am which discusses activism and over-exercising.  After that, at 11am there is a series and then at 11:30am there is a talk show with guests, music and comedy.  To end the afternoon it has news about the PM.

In the afternoon, it starts out with news summary, then is followed by Radio Shows and Music, then it is followed by Weather up until World at one, where for 45min there is news, analysis and comments. After this there is a series of documentaries and shows.

The evening starts off with Six O'clock news, followed by a series of radio shows and documentaries, like the archers, and analysis. It ends by what happened in the parliament. Then everything is repeated after 12am.

The schedule works around the average working adult, who may work from a 9-5, with news at 6pm and leisure after that. The content produced is appealing towards older generations as they discuss more matured topics like the Union and the Woman's hour. This would appeal to people who work by the sea or people who go fishing, therefore there is a shipping forecast.
